Louisiana is made up of 64 parishes, each with its own history, food, people and personality. Few people have had the opportunity to explore those communities as extensively as Karen LeBlanc, host and producer of LA64 on Louisiana Public Broadcasting.

Karen joined me on the Tigs Bits Podcast for a conversation about her career, her travels and the experiences that eventually led her to one of Louisiana’s most ambitious storytelling projects.

Discovering Louisiana Through LA64

I first became familiar with Karen’s work through the LA64 episode featuring Sabine Parish, the place where I grew up.

Watching someone visit your hometown area can sometimes make you nervous. You wonder whether they will truly understand the community or simply show the most obvious attractions.

Karen and the LA64 team captured Sabine Parish beautifully.

The episode highlighted the people, culture and natural beauty of the area without making it feel exaggerated or manufactured. Karen has a talent for allowing the people she meets to tell their own stories while still guiding viewers through the experience.

That approach has become one of the defining qualities of LA64.

A Career Built Around Communication and Curiosity

Long before LA64, Karen had already built an extensive career in journalism, television, travel media and communications.

During our conversation, she shared stories from her time working around Louisiana politics and the state legislature, along with her experiences producing content and traveling to destinations across the country and around the world.

Those different chapters of her career helped develop the skills she now brings to LA64.

She knows how to research a community, connect with people quickly and recognize the small details that can turn an ordinary visit into a memorable story.

Karen’s career also shows that professional paths do not always follow a straight line. Each opportunity, assignment and experience helped prepare her for the next one.

The Stories That Make Louisiana Special

Louisiana is often presented to outsiders through a handful of familiar images: New Orleans, Mardi Gras, Cajun food and the bayou.

Those things are important parts of the state, but they are only part of the story.

Northern Louisiana is different from South Louisiana. Rural parishes are different from major cities. Even neighboring communities can have their own traditions, accents, recipes and histories.

That variety is what makes a project like LA64 so valuable. By visiting every parish, Karen is helping document parts of Louisiana that may not always receive statewide attention. The series introduces viewers to local businesses, historic sites, outdoor destinations and residents who are deeply connected to their communities.

It also gives people who have lived in Louisiana their entire lives a reason to explore places they may have never visited.

The Work Behind a Polished Television Series

A finished television episode can make travel production look effortless, but a tremendous amount of preparation happens before the cameras begin rolling.

Locations must be researched. Interviews must be scheduled. Stories must be organized. Travel plans can change, weather can create problems and unexpected opportunities can completely reshape an episode.

Karen discussed some of the work that goes into creating a program like LA64 and the importance of remaining flexible throughout the process.

That combination of preparation and spontaneity is part of what makes the series feel natural. The team arrives with a plan, but they remain open to the people and stories they discover along the way.

Representing Louisiana With Authenticity

One of the things I appreciate most about Karen’s work is that she represents Louisiana with genuine enthusiasm without turning every location into a commercial.

She is interested, curious and respectful. That matters when telling stories about small towns and rural communities. Residents can usually tell when someone is sincerely interested in their lives and when someone is simply passing through to collect footage.

Karen’s personality allows people to relax, which often leads to better conversations and more authentic moments.

A Conversation About More Than Television

Our discussion also moved beyond Karen’s television career. We talked about personal growth, creativity, building experience and continuing to improve your craft. Karen offered an encouraging perspective on the process of developing a show and finding your voice as a creator.

It was one of those conversations that felt less like a formal interview and more like visiting with someone who has accumulated a lifetime of interesting stories. Karen is polished and professional, but she is also approachable, funny and deeply passionate about Louisiana.
