Tim and Sarah Hymel from Hymel’s Kajun Kitchen joined me for a conversation about Louisiana food, Cajun culture, social media growth and how Tim became known as “The Boudin Man.”
Most people know Tim for the cooking videos and boudin content, but there is a lot more to their story than food videos. We talked about where they both grew up, how different Louisiana accents can be depending on where you are from, and why Sarah somehow seems to pronounce every Louisiana word correctly while the rest of us struggle.
Of course, we had to get into the boudin debate early. I immediately made Tim say “boudin” because I can never pronounce it like he does. We joked that the show might need a running counter for how many times I butchered the word before the episode was over.
We also talked about how Tim became “The Boudin Man,” their seasoning “Baw Dat Good Yeah,” and what it has been like to grow Hymel’s Kajun Kitchen past 500,000 followers on Facebook.
Outside of cooking, they shared some great stories about how they met. Sarah was into rodeo and horses, and Tim admitted he bought a horse just to get closer to her, even though he was not much of a horse person himself.
The conversation also turned into a full Louisiana food debate. We got into gumbo with potato salad, what actually makes a potato salad “worthy” enough to go into the bowl, underrated gas station food, cracklins, boudin, and even Hunt Brothers pizza.
